What is Shooting?

Target shooting today is a popular sport, comprising over 41 different disciplines across 3 main categories (Fullbore Rifle & Pistol, Small-bore Rifle & Pistol, and Shotgun)

Target shooting is a Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth sport and at the elite level shooting has seen Team GB and home country athletes consistently medalling.

Benefits

Shooting is a tense sport that requires skill, concentration and nerve. Strength, stamina, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are all improved by taking part. On top of this some other benefits include:

  • Age is no barrier – it is truly a lifetime sport
  • Disability no barrier – people of all abilities can take part
  • Gender no barrier – male and female shooters can develop equal abilities
  • Relaxing
  • Holistic – combines physical, technical and psychological development
  • Can be enjoyed outdoors or indoors
  • Very safe
  • Low impact
  • Not expensive consumables can be very low cost (e.g. for airgun events)
  • Disciplined approach promotes responsibility especially in young people

Costs

Many clubs offer free taster sessions.

Involvement

The easiest disciplines to access are Air Rifle and Air Pistol and Clay Pigeon.

Air Rifle and Air Pistol can be set up easily and cheaply in a sports hall, scout hut or any other space and the equipment, ammunition and targets are relatively inexpensive and are less restricted. Training and support for this can be provided by the National Smallbore Rifle Association (NSRA). Also local clubs may cater for these disciplines where equipment and supervision will be provided.

Clay Pigeon can be easily accessed by visiting a local Clay Ground where equipment and supervision will be provided. For details of this contact the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (www.cpsa.co.uk) to find out more about the sport and find a club in your area.

Other disciplines such as Small-bore and Full-bore shooting are generally accessed by a local club – either by joining the club as a probationary member or by arrangements for fully supervised "have-a-go" taster sessions at Guest Days or National Open Days. The National Rifle Association (NRA) and NSRA can help to find clubs and opportunities for these disciplines

Equipment

Gun ownership is strictly licensed in the United Kingdom, you can rent equipment from clubs, with members often hiring guns at concessionary rates.
